Users Discontinuing Slimming Jabs Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that people who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a major health publication points out that while overweight individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users buying these treatments need to be cognizant of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a return to starting mass in about 18 months.

Weighing Approaches

The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.

Scientists point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually see a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Experts propose the mode of action of the injections accounts for the accelerated regain.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."

A Chronic Issue?

Health authorities suggest the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "underscore the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have stopped the jabs describe a intense return of hunger.

"I experienced a switch flipping and you're instantly ravenous," recalled one woman.

This challenge is compounded if individuals have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among females than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians caution that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing behavioural management.
