Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.
Video review technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Athletes are granted the ability to contest specific calls made by the official, following the practice already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This move comes just a year after the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line officials.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to review other situations, including:
- Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
- Possible hindrance end of a point.
Importantly, there is no limit on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.
Case in Point
An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.
Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."
The umpire viewed a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the point to his opponent.
Wider Implementation
This technology are not new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.
Further Updates
Another innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This solves situations where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was in or out.
In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
